Ladies Goldikova, Havre de Grace Look to Dominate Boys in Breeders’ Cup

Following in the hoofsteps of Zenyatta, a pair of ladies will be front and center in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup, which will be held on Nov. 4-5 at Churchill Downs.

The brilliant mare Goldikova ships to the U.S. again, looking to beat the boys for the fourth consecutive time in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), the tenth race on the card on Saturday.

Trained by Freddy Head, who was the winning jockey in the Mile aboard Miesque in 1987 and 1988, is confident his brilliant mare can take down an unprecedented fourth Mile victory in her last career start.

She won last year’s Mile over Gio Ponti, a three Eclipse Award winner who figures to give her another run for her money this year.

Gio Ponti comes into the Mile off a good looking score in the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland on Oct. 8.

The Christophe Clement trainee is also making his last career start in this year’s Mile.

Three other Europeans have made the trip for this year’s Mile. Zoffany goes for trainer Aidan O’Brien, and is looking to regroup off a eighth place finish in the Shadwell Turf Mile which was his U.S. debut.

Making their U.S. debuts are Qatar Prix Dollar (G2) winner Byword and Challenge Stakes (G2) winner Strong Suit.

In addition to Gio Ponti, the best chance for the home team stopping Goldikova's streak may be Courageous Cat, who is coming into the Mile off a game neck loss in the Woodbine Mile (G2).

The five-year-old ran second to Goldikova in the 2009 running of the Mile.

Havre de Grace is looking to become just the second female to win the Classic this year when she takes on a dozen in the final race of the two day championship event.

A victory in the Classic would be her sixth win in seven starts this year, the lone loss when she came up a head shy of Blind Luck in the Delaware Handicap (G2) in July.

She was successful in her first start against the boys, winning the Woodward at Saratoga on Sept. 3. The runner up in that race was Flat Out, who returned to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) in his next outing on Oct. 1.

The biggest threat to Havre de Grace’s Horse of the Year aspirations may be the 2010 champion two year old Uncle Mo.

The Todd Pletcher trainee is the 5/2 morning line favorite and appears fully recovered from a liver ailment that knocked him out of this year’s Kentucky Derby.

The colt is coming off a very impressive score in the Kelso Handicap (G2) on Oct. 1 in the mud at Belmont Park where the colt earned a career top speed figure.
