Breeders Cup Turf Sprint

The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is one of the newest races contested during the two-day championship event, first run in 2008 at Santa Anita and first made a graded race in 2010.
The race was first run at 6 ½ furlongs over the Santa Anita downhill turf course in 2008 and 2009, then was run at five furlongs over the turf course at Churchill Downs in 2010.
The race will again be run at five furlongs this year at as Churchill Downs hosts the Breeders’ Cup for the eighth time.
It was bombs away in the first running of the Turf Sprint in 2008 at Santa Anita. The 36/1 longshot Desert Code rallied from far back to get up late, pulling off the upset and returning his backers $75.00 for a $2 wager.
Diabolical (5/1) completed a $2 exacta that paid $786.20 and 16/1 longshot Storm Treasure completed a $1 trifecta that returned $6,184.20.
The second running of the Turf Sprint, also at Santa Anita was run more to form, with the lukewarm favorite California Flag getting the job done, paying $8.80.
The exotic payoffs were still generous, with 9/1 Gotta Have Her completing a $77.20 exacta and 6/1 Cannonball filling out a $1 trifecta ticket that returned $317.50.
2010 Recap: Chamberlain Bridge become the oldest Turf Sprint winner, coming with a seven wide run to rally late to score by 1 ½ lengths at the age of six.
Ridden by jockey Jamie Theriot, the gelded son of War Chant returned $15.80 and topped a $2 exacta with Central City (9/1) that paid $156.20.
There as a three way photo for third, with Unzip Me (9/1) completing a $2 trifecta that paid $1,393.60.
