Breeders Cup Mile

The Breeders’ Cup Mile probably should be renamed the “Goldikova Mile” as the brilliant mare has won the last three runnings of the race and is going for an unprecedented fourth in 2011.
The Mile race for turf runners has brought some of the most talented milers from around the world to compete in the U.S., and the ladies have won their fair share as well.
Females have won the Mile eight times, including Miesque winning back to back in 1987 and 1988.
Miesque was ridden in both of those races by Freddie Head, the trainer of Goldikova.
Olivier Peslier leads all jockeys with three wins, all aboard Goldikova (2008, 2009, 2010).
The biggest upset in Mile history occurred in 1986 when European invader Last Tycoon, with jockey Yves Saint Martin aboard edged Palace Music by a head, returning $73.80 for a $2 wager.
While Goldikova did not light up the toteboard in the past three years ($4.60, $4.80, and $5.60), we have seen plenty of upsets in the Mile.
Among the bigger prices include Opening Verse in 1991 ($55.40), Domedriver in 2002 ($54.00), and Miesque’s Approval in 2006 ($50.60).
One of the most remarkable training feats in Breeders’ Cup history came in the Mile.
Michael Dickinson saddled Da Hoss to victory in 1996 at Woodbine, and brought the gelding back from an injury to win the 1998 running at Churchill Downs off just one prep race.
2010 Recap: The brilliant mare Goldikova came to the U.S. seeking her third consecutive victory in the Mile and did not disappoint as the short priced favorite.
Ridden by Olivier Peslier, the mare came with a good late rally while wide and drew clear late to win by 1 ¾ lengths, with Gio Ponti rallying for the runner up spot.
The mare paid $4.60, with the $ 2 exacta returning $18.20.
The Freddie Head trainee became the first horse in Breeders’ Cup history to win three times, and will be going for her fourth win in the race at Churchill Downs this fall.
