Breeders Cup Turf

The Breeders’ Cup Turf is the most international of all of the races, a 1 ½ mile turf marathon that regularly draws the top turf runners worldwide to the U.S.
In fact, horses based overseas have won five of the last six runnings of the race, with English Channel the lone recent U.S. based winner in 2007.
The Turf featured the only deadheat in Breeders’ Cup history when High Chaparral and Johar hit the wire together in 2003.
In doing so, High Chaparral become the first two-time winner of the Turf, having won the race all by himself in 2002.
Conduit became the second two-time winner of the race, victorious in 2008 and 2009.
Frankie Dettori is the leading jockey with four wins (1999, 2001, 2006, 2010), and Sir Michael Stoute is the leading trainer with four Turf wins (1996, 2000, 2008, 2009).
Of the 27 runnings of the Turf, 15 have been won by horses bred outside of the U.S.
The biggest upset in Turf history happened in the very first running at Hollywood Park, when Yves Saint-Martin piloted Lashkari to the upset victory, paying $108.80 for a $2 wager.
The colt got up late to beat All Along by a neck, with the $5 exacta paying $1,099.50.
2010 Recap: A European invader won the 2010 Turf, but it was not the one bettors expected to win. Behkabed was sent off as the 6/5 betting favorite, but had to settle for third place.
The winner was the Brian Meehan trained Dangerous Midge, who pulled off the upset paying $19.00 with jockey Frankie Dettori aboard for his fourth career win in the Turf.
Pacesetter Champ Pegasus held on for the runner up spot, completing a $2 exacta that returned $172.60.
