Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf will be run for the fifth time at Churchill Downs this year, with U.S. based runners having won two of the four runnings, while shippers from overseas have fared well in this race as well.

Trainer John Gosden won this race in both 2008 and 2009 with overseas invaders Donativum ($13.60) and Pounced ($6.80) both ridden to victory by Frankie Dettori.

The first running of the race was at Monmouth Park in 2007, with Nownownow making a last to first run over yielding turf to score the upset, returning $27.20 for a $2 wager.

The betting favorite was the European shipper Archill Island with jockey Johnny Murtagh aboard. The colt had a tough trip, getting steadied in traffic in the early going, checked in more traffic on the far turn, got to the lead in the stretch, but could not hold off the winner.

Several key races for the Juvenile Turf that are Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races include the With Anticipation (G2) at Saratoga on Sept. 2, and overseas take a look at the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) at Longchamp on Oct. 2, and the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (G1) at Newmarket on Oct. 8.

2010 Recap: Pluck showed just how plucky he is, overcoming bobbling at the break to rally from the back of the pack to win last year’s Juvenile Turf, paying $14.80 for the win, with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Soldat (4/1) made a good late rally but was no match for the winner, completing a $2 exacta that paid $72.00. The 23/1 longshot Wilcox Inn completed a $2 trifecta that paid $1,393.20.
