Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is a 1 1/16 mile turf event for two-year-old fillies that is a tricky race to handicap as most of the runners only have a few starts under their belts, and often are not proven over the turf course.
The race is one of the most recent additions to the two-day championship event, first run in 2008 at Santa Anita where the Chad Brown trained Maram prevailed by a nose over Heart Shaped.
The winner paid $24.20, with the 11/1 Heart Shaped completing a generous $350.20 exacta.
The toteboard lit up again in 2009 for the second running of the race, which was won by the Dale Romans trainee Tapitsfly, who paid $21.60, with Rose Catherine (6/1) completing a $2 exacta that returned $152.40.
While many thought the overseas two-year-olds might dominate in this race, it has been the U.S. based runners that so far have dominated the race through its first three runnings.
Ungraded in its first two years, the race became a Grade 2 race in 2010.
2010 Recap: It was another upset in last year’s running of the Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs. The 6/5 heavy betting favorite Winter Memories had to settle for the runner up spot behind the Todd Pletcher trained More Than Real.
More Than Real was ridden by Garrett Gomez, who stalked the early pace while four wide, made a good move on the far turn and took over in the stretch, holding off the favorite by two lengths.
The winner returned $29.20 for a $2 wager and gave owner and celebrity chef Bobby Flay his first Breeders’ Cup victory.
