Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies

Among all of the Breeders’ Cup races, the Juvenile Fillies has produced the most Eclipse Award winners, with hall of fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas having the most success in the race.

Lukas has won the race five times, the latest in 2005 with Folklore. His other winners were Cash Run, Flanders, Open Mind, and Twilight Ridge.

The most dominant of all of the winners of the Juvenile Fillies was the performance of Countess Diana, who rolled to the win in 1997 by 8 ½ lengths as the 2/1 betting favorite.

The filly was ridden to victory by Shane Sellers, who got a leg up from trainer Patrick Byrne, who also won the Juvenile that year with Favorite Trick.

The biggest upset in the history of the race was the win by Caressing, who pulled off the upset in 2000 at Churchill Downs for trainer David Vance.

The filly paid $96.00 for a $2 wager with longshot Platinum Tiara (11/1) completing a $940.60 exacta.

Among the jockeys, the wealth has been spread around, with four jockeys sharing top billing with two wins each: Pat Valenzuela (1986, 1992), Pat Day (1987, 1994), Jerry Bailey (1995, 1999), and John Velazquez (2000, 2002).

2010 Recap: The 2010 Juvenile Fillies was a wide open affair, with five fillies between 4/1 and 5/1, with the victory going to the lukewarm betting favorite Awesome Maria.

The Stanley Gold trainee tracked the early pace while four wide heading down the backstretch, engaged pacesetter R Heat Lightning and brushed with that rival in upper stretch, took over just inside the final furlong and drew away late to win by 2 ¼ lengths.

The filly was ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez, his first Breeders’ Cup victory.

The winner paid $10.40, with pacesetter R Heat Lightning holding onto the runner up spot, the $2 exacta paying $57.80.
