Breeders Cup Juvenile

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile gives horseplayers a glimpse into the future, as the best two-year-olds in training get together, with the winner usually the early favorite for the following spring’s Kentucky Derby.
However, the winners of the Juvenile have not fared well in the Run for the Roses, with only Street Sense in 2006 parlaying a Juvenile victory into a win in the Kentucky Derby the following spring.
The race does tend to decide the Eclipse Award for outstanding two-year-old, with 21 of the 27 winners taking down the year end honors.
We have seen European shippers fare surprisingly well in this race, none more memorable than in 1991 when Arazi shipped to Churchill Downs.
The colt was sent off as the 2/1 betting favorite and after breaking a beat slow he made a breathtaking last to first run and drew off to win by five lengths under jockey Pat Valenzuela.
The biggest upset in Juvenile history came with another European invader.
Vale of York shipped in from overseas to Santa Anita in 2009 with the relatively unknown jockey Ahmed Ajtebi aboard, and pulled off the shocker, returning $63.20.
The colt upset the betting favorite Lookin At Lucky, who had to check in traffic going into the first turn and came up just a head short at 2/1.
The $2 exacta returned $334.80, and Lookin At Lucky was the Eclipse Award winner for top two-year-old despite losing the Juvenile.
The colt tracked the early pace, took over as the headed for home, and held off runner up Boys At Tosconova easily in the stretch.
The Todd Pletcher trainee returned $4.80 for the win, with second choice Boys At Tosconova completing a $17.80 exacta.
