Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

The Filly & Mare Sprint was added in 2007, giving female sprinters a race of their own, as in previous years the speedy runners would have to take on the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
While the boys go six furlongs in the Sprint, the Filly & Mare Sprint is at seven furlongs on the main track.
The race made its debut in 2007 at Monmouth Park, the first year the championship event was expanded to the current two day format.
Rallying from seventh over a sloppy sealed track with jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard, the filly Maryfield rallied to win by a half-length, returning horse bettors $18.00 for a $2 wager.
Miraculous Miss came home second at odds of 43/1, completing a $2 exacta that paid $374.80.
The results were chalky in the second running in 2008 at Santa Anita where 5/2 second choice Ventura beat the betting favorite Indian Blessing, the $2 exacta paying $25.40.
Ventura was back in 2009 as the 4/5 betting favorite, but had to settle for second behind Informed Decision, who paid $8.80 and topped a $2 exacta that returned $15.40.
2010 Recap: The Bret Calhoun trained Dubai’s Majesty made a strong move around the far turn, surged to the front heading for home and held on to win by 2 ¼ lengths, paying $19.20 for the victory.
The 8/1 Switch landed second, with the $2 exacta paying $189.60.
Dubai Majesty was ridden to victory by Jamie Theriot, who picked up two wins last year, also winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint aboard Chamberlain Bridge.
It was a wide open betting race, with the 9/2 lukewarm favorite Champagne d’Oro checking in fourth.
